Small business in America is getting squeezed in this tough economy. There may be very little money at the end of the month, but that doesn’t always mean very little marketing. Resourceful business owners are taking advantage of thousand of dollars worth of advertising opportunities with very little effort, and most of it for free using the tools available on the internet.

The days of paying big bucks to force your prospects into watching a television commercial are over. With social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In having upwards of 600,000,000 subscribers worldwide, many companies are taking a soft sell marketing approach directly to their customers via these social networks. The new solution is to give something away for free, usually in the form of information incorporated on a fan page. The information the business owners provide creates a trust between them and their prospective customers. The flow of information also establishes the business owner as an expert in their particular field. This information will lead to the prospects “inviting” more information from the business owner through a subscriber list, or a “like” on a Facebook fan page. The subscriber list gives the business owner direct, invited access to their prospects. That creates the Top of Mind Awareness required to turn the prospect into a client when they are in need of a companies particular offering.

“Marketing doesn’t have to be complicated!” says Dave Fitzgerald, owner and CEO of Fitzair Holdings, LLC. He says that most of what is out there is needlessly technical and that many programs are available for free that will accomplish almost any desired task from email newsletters to website and fan page creation and optimization. “There are so many tools available to the small business owner that there is no longer a need to be a computer programmer to market your business online. Setting up a blog and a website requires only cursory knowledge that most people already possess. What’s needed is creativity!” said Fitzgerald. He has gone so far as to create an online community that will follow along with his creation and marketing efforts day to day from the inception of a website. This community will allow people to participate in using these techniques for their own businesses, and to provide feedback on their results. “Let’s see what we can do collectively!” says Fitzgerald.
