A recent mobile survey conducted by Prosper Mobile Insights™ included 294 smartphone and tablet users from the SSI Panel who completed the survey on their devices. The survey was collected from 8/30 - 9/2/11. Forty-five percent of the sample was male while 55% was female, and the average age of the sample was 40. The data reveals that most mobile users are active on social media sites on their devices. The data also shows that 4 in 10 would switch to a new, better social media site if one is developed.

Worthington, OH (PRWEB) September 13, 2011
With mobile devices making it easier to keep in touch and manage one’s social life, it is no surprise that 85.0% of smartphone and tablet users say they access social media sites on their devices, according to a recent mobile survey among smartphone and tablet users conducted byProsper Mobile Insights™. Respondents answered questions directly on their mobile devices.
It appears smartphone and tablet users are more likely to peer in on their friends’ social lives before promoting their own. Reading status updates (69.4%) is the most popular social media activity carried out on mobile devices, followed by viewing photos (65.6%). Updating a personal status came in third with 53.4%, and just under half (49.0%) post photos taken on a smartphone or tablet:

Smartphone and tablet users, though generally active on social media sites using their devices, are not necessarily loyal to their preferred social media sites. More smartphone and tablet users (42.5%) say they would be likely to switch to a new, better social media site vs. those who say they are not likely to switch (18.2%). 37.1% remain unsure about leaving their favorite social media site.
The following are verbatim responses of what smartphone and tablet users say they would like to see in a new social media platform:
- “Ability to group friends, to allow access to only certain photos, statuses, etc to certain groups”
- “All my friends are on it”
- “Calendar of which friends you have contacted and when so you can more easily keep in contact with all your friends”
- “Dislike button”
- “Easier mobile access, no apps”
- “Faster loading of page”
- “I would like to see more deals from stores for 'checking in' - similar to foursquare”
- “More privacy options”
- “No one under 18 years of age”
- “Radio app where you can play music in the background”
- “Video conferencing and chat to help keep in touch with people that are important to us”
- “What local entertainment is available”
Google+ has answered a few of these concerns, such as video chatting capabilities and groups for friends resulting in added privacy. While 50.7% of smartphone and tablet users say they currently have a Google+ account, 26.5% admit they do not use it often. Another 15.6% of these mobile users ask “What’s Google+?”
