Networks were very different back in the 1980's. The Internet, as we know it, was not open or widespread, dial-up was king and hard drive capacity was measured in megabytes, not gigabytes. Networking was very much around, though. Computers all over the world could still be linked up, and there were ways of communicating.
One way was Usenet. While usability was very primitive by today's standards, it still allowed users to share text and images as well as other small files.
