James Schramko, renowned Internet marketing expert, has recently posted on his blog, InternetInternetMarketingSpeed.com, a podcast of his interview with his friend, software integrations expert Steve Ovens. The topic of choice is app development and Ovens, a veteran in software development, provides insider insight on this emerging industry.

Answering questions such as “Whom would you hire to build an app?” and “How much does it cost to make an app?” Ovens is able to give the listeners a good idea of what is involved in the process of web development in the 20 or so minutes that the podcast runs.

Ovens, who was working in Silicon Valley during the time of the original technology bubble, shares that he has gone to some introductory training to learn as much as he can about apps. “Even though I’ve been building software since I was in short pants, it doesn’t mean that I’m a good app developer. I can’t just start building apps. There’s a whole bunch of stuff to learn and that’s because I want to know enough about it to make good decisions,” he points out.

There is mention in the interview as well of why people would want to create an app. Schramko and Ovens allude to two main groups. One group involves those who have a business and want to extend something of value to a potential audience. A good percentage of the rest, however, got the idea from attending webinars with a guru telling them that it’s a way to make big money quickly. The reality, unfortunately, is that for the majority of those who venture into app development, the entire enterprise is essentially just money out of their pockets.

The conversation also raises interesting points about areas for improvement in the entire apps market, an important one of which involves the incompatibility issues of apps with regards to Android devices and the iPhone, albeit the existence of an interpreter platform.

Fractions of the discussion also allude to the competitive games market, the importance of coming up with an original idea, considerations when hiring app developers offshore, etc. Schramko poses a possible app concept for his own business: “This is a business extension of something that I already have in my information division and it would probably cross into the software area of my business where I want to extend the problem solving ability of my offer beyond just the format that it is currently in and take it into a portable arena.”

Listening to the podcast is a good way to keep up to speed as to what goes on in the apps industry. With the popularity and current relevance of the topic, Schramko says that there could possibly be more podcasts on apps to come, and coins the term “App-date” for such episodes.
