fishbat, a Social Media Agency, Responds to School’s Restriction of Student, Teacher Social Media Interaction

Following an article published by Hispanic Business outlining a recent story banning students and teachers to communicate on social media sites, social media agency fishbat encourages the use of social networking in the school setting for educational purposes.

On December 6, fishbat responds to an article published by Hispanic Business about how a North Carolina public school district banned students and teachers from interacting on social networks.
According to the article published by Hispanic Business, Kinston High School Board announced in early November that employees are not allowed to “friend” current students on social networks. The article reports that the policy does not differentiate between employees using the social networks for personal or educational reasons. However, the policy does not forbid teachers to engage in communication with students they are related to or have outside relationships with through civic, sport and religious organizations.
The article also reported that some students were unhappy with the new policy because it interfered with homework reminders. One Kinston High School student, DeAndria Bryant, said, “If we can't follow the teachers, I think that's bad. One of my teachers has a class account that reminds us when we have tests or to study.”
Another teacher in the district also revealed in the article that he uses Twitter and Edmodo to remind students about quizzes and assignments. The policy restricts any communication between students and teachers using social media.
Justin Maas, VP of client relations at social media agency fishbat, said, “Social media does not have to be looked at as an unprofessional form of technology. Social media has many benefits to teachers and other professionals, but banning communication between students and teachers seems unnecessary, especially since students responded well to having educational reminders on there.”
Teachers in the district found to be in violation of the policy could be terminated or dealt with in a severe disciplinary manor, the article said.
