As per an update on 30 May, 2013 on CNN.com reveals how Facebook came under fire, as dozens of advertisers stopped all paid promotions and even threatened to stop all Facebook related activities, when it came to light that there were hundreds perhaps even thousands of pages on the platform that promoted and encouraged hate speech against women.

As per the report, Facebook since then has removed some of the pages and vowed that it would work harder to ensure that the platform is not used to promote hate or intolerance. The company assured users and businesses that it would work with women’s right groups and take the help of legal experts to better train the team that are there to deal with feedback on these and similar issues.
However, it has taken a barrage of advertisers to stop their Facebook advertisements for the company to start taking these steps. Says Samuel, “It’s only when such mega brands like P&G, Dove and Nissan pulled off their advertisements and other big companies threatened to follow suit, that Facebook agreed to take action.”
According to CNN, the open letter written by Women’s Groups was what started caused the pressure to build. The letter not just targeted the platform but put pressure on companies whose advertisements appeared on pages and next to posts that glorified abuse and violence against women.
