Teen development startup, Empower.me, launched recently with the goal of helping teens get better grades, study for their SAT/ACT, find careers they love, and learn life skills such as personal finance – all while increasing family harmony. Empower.me allows teens to earn financial rewards for learning, performing chores, and doing one time tasks.

A highly effective way of helping kids learn both for school and life is by giving them rewards for performance and time spent learning. The earn-while-you-learn reward system has gained popularity recently, even being studied in 2010 by a Harvard Economist.

“Empowering students to take charge of their finances with the help of their parents through ‘earn-while-you-learn’ is not bribing,” states Bryan Starbuck, founder and CEO of Empower.me.

“Our website offers a concept with which students pick the educational videos to watch, giving them full freedom of choice in learning, which Empower.me is all about,” he added.

Once teens and parents sign up at Empower.me, parents set the maximum amount their teens can earn watching educational videos online. The average amount for each video is $3 to $5. Each of these videos are typically 10 minutes in length, with topics ranging from standard school subjects to current events and other relevant videos that will eventually help prepare teens to take their SATs and ACTs as well as find careers they love.

“Existing learning platforms provide insufficient motivation for students to learn outside of their school curriculum. It’s not just about getting better grades; it’s about providing learning assistance to our kids while at the same time teaching them the value of self-earned money. It is very important to equip the students of today so they can explore their passions early on,” says Starbuck.

Empower.me has raised $650,000 of a $1.3 million Series A funding round, was founded by Bryan Starbuck with Scott Honji in late 2011, and has its current headquarters in Redmond, Washington. VisitEmpower.me for more information.
