On November 29, 2012, [online marketing firm fishbat, Inc. releases a statement after examining an article published by The Motley Fool regarding the newly embraced use of social media among young Chinese leaders to sway public opinion over initial government tactics to “block and censor” online conversations.
According to an article by The Motley Fool, “Dozens of the more than 2,000 party delegates, among them Chairman Mao's grandson, are using social media to wax rhapsodic about China's rise and Party General Secretary Hu Jintao's live 90-minute reading of highlights from this year's party work report.” There have been a larger amount of social media posts coming from their congress. [The Motley Fool continues to report that delegates have been posting images of themselves at places like Tiananmen Square and pictures of The Great Hall of the People.
However, The Motley Fools brings up the point that “the Internet has become a two-way street that's also being used by the public to poke fun at and critique the propaganda.” Many comments have been made towards the recent posts from current delegates. The Motley Fool highlights a few responses including Sina Weibo users joking about excessive crying at the congress meeting and an explosion of old headlines comparing how past party rhetoric is the same as what delegates and officials are posting now.
Online marketing firm fishbat Inc. understands the growth of social media and how the public’s voice can become so powerful through it. VP of Client Relations at fishbat, Justin Maas comments, “Social Media has been growing rapidly in China which gives new outlets for their mass population to speak their minds more freely. Even with the previous censoring from the Chinese government, user’s voices will find a way through because of the Internet’s size. China’s leaders can only use social media now to establish a base online and connect more with their people.”
