Predictable Profits Publishes New Blog Exposing Emotional Buying Decisions

In a blog post recently published by small business marketing company Predictable Profits, founder and CEO Charles Gaudet reminds readers that despite the “lie” people tell themselves about making purchases based on research, facts, and logic, most buying decisions are strongly rooted in emotion.
He says, “I’m not saying we’re a bunch of suckers – but there’s irrefutable evidence that the real reason why we make a purchase is almost always not the reason we give ourselves. We buy on emotion and rationalize with logic.”
Through examples of advertisements featured in major publications, as well as data from a 2007 study by Carnegie Mellon University, Gaudet shows how marketing is positioned to appeal to the emotional responses of prospective customers.
“…They’re not trying to sell you on all the reasons why they might be best, brightest, or most cost effective in the industry,” he continues, “the focus is on appealing to the emotional response of prestige, confidence, and the promise of advancement.”
The article shows that when prospective customers make an emotional attachment to an advertisement or other marketing effort, they are more likely to make a purchase – even if this emotionally charged purchase is later rationalized.
